Our arrival to Costa Rica, be greeted by staff of Boyero Tours at the airport. Transfer to your comfortable B&B. This evening we will have the chance to relax and meet our guide and other group members.
Morning drive to Boruca with stops to sight see and learn about Costa Rica
Homemade lunch in Boruca accompanied by a talk about the local culture by a community leader
We will meet the local women who will be teaching us their traditional techniques, followed by a walking tour of the town.
Our textiles workshop will start with a drop spindle demonstration with natural cotton grown in Boruca and preparation of hanks of yarn for dyeing.
With the local women we will visit the sacred mountain of Cuasran and a family farm where we will identify plants and harvest some to bring back for dyeing the yarn.
Afternoon visit to another plantation where we will see balsa trees used for mask making and collect other plants used for dyeing yarn
In the evening we will hear Borucan legends told by an elder.
Today the local artisans will demonstrate and then walk us through the steps for preparing the remaining yarn for dyeing and dye it with the different plants we have collected. We will also hang yarn to dry.
We will make skeins from the newly dyed yarn. Under the careful tutelage of the local women artisans we will set up the looms, combine colors, and decide on our designs. We will finally begin to weave!
Today we will work on our weaving and designs, completing a belt or other small project. We will take an afternoon visit to the waterfalls and have some time to shop for souvenirs.
Breakfast in Boruca and say our goodbyes to host families.
Some of our new Borucan friends will travel to the beach with us to show us one last technique – that of dyeing yarn with murex, a secretion of a small marine snail.
After we say our goodbyes to the Borucan weavers, we will head for our ecolodge on the Central Pacific.
We will take a morning hike in the park. In the afternoon we can opt for different things - beach time, relaxing at the lodge, or an optional rainforest canopy zip line tour.
Morning tour snorkeling and kayaking in Marino Ballena National Park, lunch at the hotel, afternoon to relax
After a last delicious breakfast at our ecolodge we will return to the Central Valley visting Sarchí, the artisan town that has been called the “cradle of culture” on the way. Here we will learn about ox-carts with their fabulous paint jobs and other wooden handicrafts and furniture made in the town.
Overnight at a comfortable B&B
Today we will visit the nearby Poás Volcano early to have the best chance to see it clear of clouds. Along the way we will visit a gourmet coffee plantation and see the process from seed to our coffee cups! In the afternoon we will visit a wildlife rehabilitation center and live animal exhibit which is truly dedicated to conservation. In the evening we will share a delicious farewell dinner.
